The Britannia Mine has a story that spans past, present and future. From the early days of the mine, when employees came from far and wide to work, to the successful environmental remediation of the mine, to the movies that have been filmed here, there is much to tell.
We continue to welcome local clubs and community groups to visit the Museum and learn about the pioneers that lived and worked in this storied community. Our modern Visitor Centre explores mining and its relevance in our daily lives with interactive exhibits and a feature film. This Centre is wheelchair accessible.
Much of the Britannia Story relates to the early to mid 20th century, so many of our visitors can connect directly with it, as the social history is just as important to us as the mining history. The Administrative Building is a revitalized pioneer building that demonstrates the history of the mine and the lives of the pioneers who lived, and worked in this community; displaying compelling archival images and mine artifacts. This building is wheelchair accessible.
The Mine and Mill tour, going underground on a train into a mine tunnel and then into the concentrator mill, departs on a regular basis throughout the day. Our Interpreters love to listen just as much as they love to talk, so it's not uncommon for them to pick up a few new stories on a tour. Please note there are 48 steps leading to the Tunnel Tour and this is not wheelchair accessible.
With our Social History Tour, your group has a private guide for an hour, who shares stories of what it was like to live in this company town, explains how the buildings were used for work and play, and hands around old photos and artefacts for you to examine and discuss. Click here for details of this highly informative, optional tour.
