Britannia Mine Museum is hosting the 2024 BC Provincial Mine Rescue and First Aid Competition on June 7 & 8, 2024.

Organized by the Ministry of Energy, Mines and Low Carbon Innovation (EMLI) and the Mining Association of BC (MABC), the 66th annual competition maintains and showcases the BC mining industry’s leading and highly specialized health, safety and rescue practices, bringing together mine rescue teams from all over the province to test their emergency response abilities.

Competing Mine Rescue teams from both surface and underground mines from around the province will put on a display of their rescue techniques, aiming to be the top team and to earn the respect and admiration of their peers. The competition provides an opportunity for the public, industry and the Province to gauge the capabilities of mine rescue in Industry today.

Mine Rescue is the specialized job of rescuing miners and others who have become trapped or injured in a mining accident. Mine Rescue team members are an elite group with specialized skills and training and act as the mine’s fire department, paramedics, high angle rescue teams and have even contributed their rescue skills to their communities in times of need.

Admission & Viewing Opportunities

The competition is split into two days;

  • Friday June 7, where 3 teams will compete in underground mine tasks. (Underground event, limited public viewing access)

  • Saturday June 8, where 6 teams will participate in surface rescue tasks.

Competitions will take place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday and 8 a.m to 4 p.m on Saturday.

Admission to view the competition as well as our lower site exhibits including our Summer Exhibit Rock Solid: Safety in Mines will be complimentary on June 7th and 8th.

Please note there will be no BOOM! show and underground tours available on these days.

About the Competition

Teams compete in a variety of tasks testing their skills in areas in simulated underground and surface rescue challenges.

  • Firefighting

  • Rope Rescue
  • Practical Skills
  • Leadership
  • Teamwork
  • Rescue Techniques
  • Hazardous Environment Management

In each event teams have to evaluate and overcome different obstacles, while managing the health and safety of their team members and potentially injured workers. The fire task is one of the tasks that stands out because teams are required to put their firefighting skills to the test by dealing with live fire.
