Last Shift- November 1, 1974

Miners waiting to head underground for the last shift

50 Years since the 'Last Shift'

November 1, 1974 - November 1, 2024

50 years ago on November 1, 1974, as the last shift whistle blew, life at Britannia Beach was forever changed.

The Mine Manager, John Lovering, informed the workers on October 7th that production would cease at Britannia on the afternoon shift of November 1, 1974. Thus ending the 70-year legacy of one of the world's largest copper mines.

The Museum was opened shortly after in the summer of 1975 due to the efforts of The Britannia Beach Historical Society.

Visit us and discover how the museum has preserved the legacy of more than 60,000 people who once called Britannia home during the mine’s operation.
